IT Lecturer Training

When we think about lecturing as a whole, it seems to be something that should come naturally to everyone. We can all speak, and to lecture, all one needs to do is convey the important facts and details about a certain subject orally. However, many do not realize that lecturing can became very tedious for both the lecturer and the audience that is being lectured. A talented Lecturer however can keep thier students interested by creating intersting learning activities, challanges and by engaging the class. In short lecturing is teaching but in a more formal and intensive way than what you would have probably experienced at school.

Planning lecturers is essential: Before someone lectures to others, he/she must have a mental or physical layout of what he/she plans to teach during the lecture. This will allow the lecturer to already know what he/she plans to speak about to the audience. This is also very beneficial because the lecturer has a mental map of what is going to be said and he/she does not have to worry about thinking of details off the top of his/her head.

It is also very helpful if the lecturer is able to connect the lecture subject with a current event or something that will catch the audience’s attention. For example, a college professor giving a lecture at a university should find a way to involve the students. Listening to someone speak for 20-30 minutes is not always the most exciting, however, the lecturer can draw the audience in with something that they can relate to on a personal and intellectual level.

White lecturing, it is important that the lecturer moves around. If the lecturer stays in one place throughout the length of the lecture, the audience usually starts to get bored of looking at the same thing. Hand usage, pictures, graphs, or drawings are always helpful in keeping the audience excited about the lecture.

The lecturer should also be aware that less is more. It is best to stay on the topic of one main focus instead of rambling on about small, very specific details. Students do not want hundreds of facts during a lecture because it causes them to lose interest very quickly. While using the less is more approach, the lecturer should also find ways to say the information in a different phrasing. To express something that is important and should be remembered, the lecturer should phrase the information differently each time that it is expressed to the audience.

A college professor lecturing about a certain topic in a course should set a basic foundation for work that students will complete on their own after the lecture. The college professor should convey that taking lecture notes is very important and will be helpful in order to remember specific details that are said. A professor’s lecture should also most definitely include specific concepts that may be challenging that he/she does not want the student’s to spend a lot of time researching.

Lecturing and teaching a college course at a university should go hand in hand. If the professor is a good professor, he/she should also be fairly skilled at lecturing. The keys to a good lecture are less is more, stick to a main topic, enforce lecture notes, and find ways to keep the audience’s attention through diagrams, pictures, etc.
