Lecturers and teachers are important constituents of any society or economy. Public colleges and universities in many lands are usually owned by the government and generally pay les than private universities and colleges. The type of school and the management would thus determine the salary package of the lecturer. The level of education and experience of the lecturer would also determine the pay. An education institution lecturer that has attained the level of a doctorate or professor would definitely earn more than his teaching colleagues.

The field or subject matter of a lecturer would also affect his pay packet.  A marketing lecturer might not necessary earn same as an IT lecturer. The number of jobs and vacancies in relation to the amount labor supply of lecturers in that field would also determine the likely salary that the lecturer would receive. Areas where lecturers are scarce would usually attract higher remuneration than areas and locations where their supply is more abundant. Part time lecturers would definitely find their responsibility less demanding than lecturers who teach and lecture as full time careers and would also receive less.

To be a qualified lecturer a student has to read and study hard. He has to study and gain knowledge of the related subject courses but he also has to learn how to be an educationalist.  For example would be IT lecturers, would have to be trained as an IT professional and then also learn appropriate teaching skills. He has to study and understand some aspects of psychology to be able to identify the different type of students and understand how to cope with them.  He has to understand how to prepare IT lecture notes, how to prepare for lectures, how to set questions and also how to administer discipline. It is thus clear that lecturers do undergo additional training and learning to be a qualified to bear the title of a lecturer of a college or university.
