Careers in IT Lecturing

Have you ever thought about who lectures others on a daily basis? College professors, high-school teachers, and maybe even your boss; all of these people at one point in the day lecture, or have lectured others during their career. Though lecturing is not always commonly connected with a lot of jobs, many employees do in fact lecture.

For instance, politicians are lecturers. Every time a politician gives a speech, he/she is lecturing to a group of people. This group of people listens and takes in what the politician has to say. His or her lecture usually includes specific ideology that relates to his or her beliefs. These beliefs are expressed to the audience through a lecture and are meant to be considered. Politicians lecture in order to receive support from his or her audience.

More commonly, college professors lecture their students every other day, maybe even everyday. This might not be what they are known as, lecturers, but lecturing makes up a good amount of their work, if not all of it. At universities, professors lecture in order to inform students of important information about a certain subject such as history, theories, or basic background information.

Many probably believe that lecturing would be a very boring and low-paying job. However, this is definitely not the case when it comes to college professors. According to the AAUP (American Association of University Professors) the salaries of lecturers at schools vary. Professor’s wages vary for many reasons. For one, the professor’s salary depends on where he/she teaches. If the professor works at a private college, he/she would probably make more money than a professor that lectures at a community college. The area in which the college is located is also a factor. If the professor is an assistant, he/she will probably make less than a tenured full time professor. The course that the professor teaches is also a variable in determining his/her salary. The AAUP states that professors that lecture in Engineering and Liberal Arts classes tend to make the most money while professors that teach English and History seem to make the least.

It is said that professors can make a range of $30,000 a year to more than $100,000 a year. Adjunct professors, part-time lecturers, are paid by the contact hour. Adjunct professors make around $35.00 per contact hour. This usually totals up to about $2000 for a 16 week semester course.

As you can see, professors do make a decent living by lecturing college students. A career in lecturing is also something to consider because according to Tennessee Tech University, it takes three times the payment to pay a full-time professor than a lecturer. This is a benefit for anyone who wants to become a lecturer.
